There’s something exciting and intriguing about Kathmandu Valley. 

From sightseeing to mountain biking and shopping to live music, you can do almost anything and everything while you’re here. 

Kathmandu’s cultural and artistic history is prevalent, awaiting to be explored by you guys! 

The most interesting things to do in this beautiful valley encompass hiking, architecture, culture, spirituality, and everything in between.

When visiting Kathmandu for WordCamp Kathmandu 2023, there are numerous things you can do to make the most of your trip.

Places to Visit and Things to Do in Kathmandu Valley 

First of all, we’d suggest you visit some of the top attractions of Kathmandu Valley. 

1. Boudhanath Stupa

As of 1979, Boudha Stupa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as one of the largest and most beautiful Buddhist stupas all around the world. 

We must say it has a serene and spiritual ambiance. A place to find peace amongst the chaos of Kathmandu Valley. 

Things to do in Bouddha: 

  • Join the ritual of the kora (walking clockwise around the stupa).
  • Spin prayer wheels, light butter lamps, and offer your prayers.
  • If you’re a foodie, we suggest visiting Tibetan restaurants and cafes. 
  • Visit the museum and explore Buddhist art and artifacts.

2. Swayambhunath Temple

Swayambhunath Temple is believed to have been established over 2,000 years ago. It is popularly known as the monkey temple. This sacred Buddhist site is located on a hilltop. 

If you want to take a glance at the entire city, we must say it is a suitable place to do so. You can enjoy both sunrise and sunset! 

You’ll enjoy watching a large dome-shaped structure adorned with a pair of eyes on each side. It is recognized as the “All-Seeing Eyes of Buddha.”

  • We’d suggest you steep walk up the 365 steps. 
  • Try Po Cha (Tibetan butter tea), Tingmo, Newari cuisine, and Thenthuk. 
  • Take some time for personal reflection and meditation.

3. Thamel

You can find stunning architecture that showcases a blend of traditional Newar and Mughal styles. Explore Nasal Chowk, Mul Chowk, and Basantapur Durbar. 

One of the highlights is being able to witness Kumari, the living goddess of Nepal. We’d suggest you explore the lively street market and purchase something for you and your family.

Chandragiri Hills is a famous tourist destination situated at an altitude of 2,551 meters. You’ll be able to view Kathmandu Valley and surrounding hills and mountain ranges. 

You can conveniently reach the top of Chandragiri Hills by taking a cable car ride. On your way there, you’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking scenic views of hills in the ten minutes ride. 

At the summit of Chandragiri Hills, there is Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Do visit there and offer prayers. 

Things to do in Chandragiri Hills:

7.Pashupatinath Temple

Visiting Pashupatinath temple is definitely worth it! Located on the bank of the Bagmati River, this place holds a significant religious value for Hindus. 

There are several ghats situated nearby. Moreover, you can also visit several different monasteries, shrines, and ashrams inside its premises. We’re sure if you belong to a Hindu family, your family would love to get prasad from this temple.

Things to do in Pashupatinath Temple: 

  • Take a full walk through the vast area of this temple.
  • Attending morning aarti or sitting by the sacred Bagmati river. 
  • Reflect, meditate, or offer prayers.

We can rightfully say that Asan is a paradise for food lovers! Don’t miss the opportunity to taste Newari delicacies, momo, kwati, samosa, and traditional sweets.

This place is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. Patan Durbar Square is renowned due to its architecture which takes us back to the Medieval period. 

The prominent landmark and structures include Hiranya Varna Mahavir (Golden Temple), Krishna Mandir, Taleju Bell, Sundari Chowk etc.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in Bhaktapur, also popularly known as Bhadgaon. 

This ancient Newar city is well known for its rich culture and traditions. The architecture and buildings are perfect examples of Newar craftsmanship, stone sculptures, and woodcarvings.

Some of the most famous attractions include The 55 Window Palace, Vatsala Temple, Nyatapola, Bhaktapur National Art Gallery etc.
