If you are new here, it might sound a little scary, like something only developers or experienced people can join.

This post is here to walk you through what it actually is before WordCamp Kathmandu 2026.

What is Contributor Day?

Contributor Day is a full day where people come together to help improve WordPress. Instead of sitting and listening to talks, you spend the day actually working on WordPress, whether that means writing code, fixing bugs, writing guides, translating, or helping the community in other ways.

Every WordCamp around the world has a Contributor Day. The idea is always the same: it is a chance for anyone, beginner or expert, to sit down and directly help WordPress get better.

At WordCamp Kathmandu 2026, Contributor Day is on September 18th, the day before the main conference, at Alice Receptions, Gairidhara.

Workshops for Beginners

We run trainings at every Contributor Day to help people get hands on experience, and this time we have two workshops open for everyone to join.

We have WordPress Training with Full Site Editing, focused for beginners. You will build a website using WordPress and the Full Site Editor (FSE), step by step, with no prior experience needed.

Plugin Workshop: This one is also beginner friendly. You will learn the basics of how WordPress plugins work, and get comfortable with simple plugin building and customization.

Both workshops are made so a first timer can follow along easily and leave having actually built something, not just watched.

What Actually Happens on the Day?

Other Ways to Take Part :

Besides these two workshops, Contributor Day also has contributor tables, small groups where people work on different parts of WordPress. We are looking for Table Leads across teams like Core, Documentation, Support, Marketing, Polyglots, Training, Community, Accessibility, Themes and Theme Review, Plugins and Plugin Review, Test Team, Meta, Openverse, Patterns, Photos, WP-CLI, and WordPress.tv.

Which tables actually show up depends on who signs up to lead them, so we will share the final list closer to the event. Some you will most likely see include:

Core: Fixing bugs and improving WordPress software.

Documentation: Writing or updating guides that help people use WordPress.

Support: Answering questions on the WordPress support forums.

Polyglots: Translating WordPress into different languages, including Nepali.

Training: Building learning material for WordPress.org/learn.

Community: Helping organize local meetups and future WordCamps.

You do not need to know all of this beforehand. Table leads will explain what their team is working on and how you can join in, no matter your experience level.

Who Should Join?

Almost anyone. Here is a simple way to figure out where to start.

If you have never used WordPress before, start with the WordPress Training with FSE workshop. It is made exactly for people like you.

If you are curious about how plugins work, try the Plugin Workshop. No prior knowledge needed there either.

If you already know WordPress and want to go further, the contributor tables like Core, Documentation, Support, and Polyglots are a good place to make real contributions.

If you are a student, this is a good way to gain real experience working on an open source project, something you can talk about later.

If you speak Nepali well, the Polyglots team could use your help translating WordPress so more people in Nepal can use it in their own language.

In short, whether this is your first time hearing about WordPress or you have used it for years, there is something here for you.

Why It Is Worth Your Time

Beyond what you learn, Contributor Day is also a good place to meet people. You sit with a small group for hours, working on the same goal, and conversations happen naturally in a way they usually do not during regular sessions. Many long term friendships and even job opportunities have started this way.

It also feels good to leave the day having built or learned something real, especially if it is your first time.

How to Join

Contributor Day is included with your WordCamp Kathmandu 2026 ticket, no extra registration needed. Just show up on September 18th at Alice Receptions, Gairidhara, pick a workshop or a table, and get started. If you are unsure where to go, our organizing team will help point you in the right direction.

Bring a laptop if you can, especially for the FSE and Plugin workshops. For some tables, like Polyglots or Documentation, a laptop is not required.

See you there on September 18th!

If you have been part of the WordPress community for a while, you have probably heard the term “Contributor Day” before every WordCamp.
