Workshop on creating a Custom Gutenberg Block in WordPress

At WordCamp Kathmandu 2022, we’re having a workshop on how to create a custom Gutenberg block in WordPress. 

What is a Gutenberg Custom Block? Why should one attend this session?

Gutenberg is a codename of a new set of website-building tools. Block Editor allows adding Blocks and Gutenberg blocks are layout building units on the Block Editor.

Although the WordPress block editor (“Gutenberg”) provides plenty of built-in blocks, it might come with some limitations or it might on exactly fit your requirement. This is where creating a custom element can be useful. You can bring your creative visions to life by creating a custom Gutenberg Block in WordPress.

In this session, you’ll learn how to create custom blocks, inner blocks, dynamic blocks, and more. It includes all the development processes.

Prerequisites for attending the session

  • Consider bringing your own laptops and charger.
  • Download and install XAMPP/WAMP/MAMP or any local development server on your laptop. You can also download XAMPP from the link given below: https://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/tutorials/installing-a-local-server/xampp/ 
  • Attendees should install WordPress on their laptop. You can download WordPress from the link below: https://wordpress.org/download/ 
  • Download and install Node.js + npm. Go to the Node’s site [download + install] (https://nodejs.org/en/download/) Node on your system. This will install both `Node.js` and `npm`, i.e., node package manager — the command line interface of Node.js. You can verify the install by opening your terminal app and typing…
    node -v
    # Results into 8.15.0 — or installed version.

At WordCamp Kathmandu 2022, we are going to have an insightful workshop on developing a Full Site Editing (FSE) theme for WordPress. If you are a WordPress developer and are curious about creating FSE themes, this is the right place.

What is Full Site Editing? Why should one attend this workshop?

Full site editing is a set of features that allows users to style/customize the whole website using blocks.

This session will go through the interconnected parts of WordPress’s full site editing (FSE) and how they may help you develop outstanding site designs without having to write any code. The session will also cover how to develop a simple block theme from scratch.

Ujwal Thapa Scholarship

The Ujwal Thapa Scholarship entry is now closed. We will be announcing the awardee soon.

WordCamp Kathmandu 2022 is announcing the Ujwal Thapa scholarship as a tribute to the contribution of the Late Ujwal Thapa to the WordPress Community. There may be fewer of us who don’t know what he did for society and the WordPress community in Nepal in general. Among many things he initiated, the group WordPress Nepal was one that he founded along with Chandra Maharzan and Sakin Shrestha. This group has since grown leaps and bounds and is over 8200 people strong.

However, it is all the memories that he left for us but we can freshen up them by continue doing good wills in his footsteps. There are many initiations that he initiate and made successful with his hard work. This very group has climbed the ladder of success and all of us are thankful to him for that initiation he took back in 2011.

To honour his work and for his remembrance, we have decided to allocate 5 tickets as a scholarship for this event. These will be full fledge tickets for the two-day event. These tickets would be for people who would want to attend the event but cannot afford the ticket.

We are planning to provide 3 scholarships for people from outside Kathmandu valley and 2 for inside valley.

If you or your friends, colleagues or anyone in your circle want to attend the event but cannot afford to, please feel free to fill out the form below.

Criteria:

  • Is a WordPress contributor or is interested in WordPress
  • Has never attended WordCamp Kathmandu before.
  • Requires financial assistance to attend.

What is covered?

  • Scholars from outside Kathmandu valley will receive return bus fares along with accommodation for 3 nights and 4 days at a standard hotel and a free ticket.
  • People inside the valley will receive just the tickets.
  • The final decision will be made by the WordCamp Kathmandu 2022 team and Ujwal Thapa Foundation.
